Our Beginnings

Mawarid’s Oman operations are located in the Al Batinah region of Oman (near the U.A.E. border to the north of Sohar), in the north-east of the Arabian Peninsula. Copper Mining has been carried out in the Al Batinah region for approximately 6000 years and Mawarid is taking its place as the most recent participant in a long held tradition.

In 2000, we were granted a license by the government of Oman to explore Block 1 in the highly prospective Sohar region in Northern Oman. We discovered commercial resources at Hatta and Shinas and in 2004 completed a feasibility study that confirmed the commercial viability of the projects.

Production at Hatta mine commenced in Autumn 2006 and the first batch of copper concentrates was delivered on 11th May 2007.

An Exploration License for the Ghuzayn area was granted in June 2005. Exploration work at Ghuzayn is continuing, with the results indicating a modestly sized, lower grade resource. The Block 2 Exploration License was granted in August 2008.  In 2009 we delineated economic reserves at Mandoos (Block 1)

and Safwa (Block 2). These projects have advanced to the development phase and mining is scheduled to commence in 2010.

Mawarid’s Oman Copper projects have strategic importance to Oman in terms of developing the mining industry, benefiting local subcontractors and providing employment to Omani citizens in the nearby communities.
