Mawarid owns and operates the Lasail Copper
concentrator located about 35 km inland from
Sohar on the Buraimi-Abu Dhabi Road. The
strategic geographical positioning of Sohar
(Oman’s second largest port and city) allows
Mawarid easy access to overseas markets.
The Lasail Copper concentrator at a glance:
-
The concentrator is designed to upgrade
mined ore, which averages around 2-3%
copper, to a grade of between 18% and 24%
copper.
-
Currently (Sept 2011), the concentrator has
a throughput of 130 tonnes/hour with 93%
availability.
-
Project work is completed to upgrade the
facility to a throughput of 140 tonnes/hour.
-
The copper concentrate is sold for further
processing to the international market for
export and to Oman Mining Company LLC (a
government owned entity) that operates the
Lasail smelter and refinery complex adjacent
to the concentrator.
-
Mawarid has constructed a modern tailings
storage facility and water recovery system.
It is the first of its kind in the Sultanate
and is fully compliant with the Sultanate’s
environmental legislation.
-
The analytical lab located in the Lasail
Concentrator is staffed by experienced
chemists and has internationally accepted
sample preparation and analytical equipment
to analyze geochemical samples from the
plant, exploration and mine.
